Purkersdorf is a town municipality in the district of Sankt Pölten-Land in Lower Austria, directly bordering the west of Vienna. Geographically, the town lies in the valley of the Wien River and is surrounded by the wooded hills of the Vienna Woods. The history of the settlement dates back to the 12th century, with the town being first mentioned in documents in 1130 as Purchartsdorf. A central role in the town's development was played by the Purkersdorf Sanatorium, built between 1904 and 1905 by the prominent architect Josef Hoffmann in the Art Nouveau style, considered a milestone of modern architecture. In the 16th century, Purkersdorf was an important imperial post station on the route from Vienna to Linz. Today, the town is characterized by a high quality of life, numerous hiking trails in the Purkersdorf-Sandsteinwienerwald Nature Park, and excellent transport connections to the federal capital.
