Melk Abbey (Austria)

Weather…

Melk Abbey is one of Europe's most significant and beautiful Baroque ensembles. The Benedictine monastery perches majestically on a cliff overlooking the town of Melk and the Danube river in Lower Austria. Since its founding in 1089 by the Babenbergs, the abbey has been continuously inhabited by monks. Its current appearance is due to master builder Jakob Prandtauer, who rebuilt the monastery between 1702 and 1736 in magnificent High Baroque style. Highlights of a visit include the Marble Hall, the abbey church with its massive dome, and, above all, the world-famous library. The library houses over 100,000 volumes and hundreds of medieval manuscripts; it served as the inspiration for Umberto Eco's novel 'The Name of the Rose'. The abbey park, featuring a Baroque garden pavilion, provides a place of peace with impressive views of the Danube Valley. The town of Melk itself serves as the western gateway to the Wachau region. Visitors can stroll through the characterful alleys of the old town or embark on a boat trip along the Danube. In the surrounding area, numerous 'Heurige' (wine taverns) and hiking trails through the vineyards await. Melk is a symbol of the connection between spirituality, science, and art, attracting hundreds of thousands of culture enthusiasts annually. It is easily reachable from Vienna in about an hour by train or car.
