Mödling is located on the edge of the Vienna Basin, where the Mödlingbach gorge emerges from the Vienna Woods into the plains. The city looks back on a rich history as the residence of a branch of the Babenbergs, which earned it the nickname Babenberg City. The historical center charms visitors with narrow alleys, well-preserved townhouses from various eras, and the late Gothic town hall. The parish church of St. Othmar with its striking charnel house is another significant monument. In the 19th century, Mödling was a magnet for many artists and composers, including Ludwig van Beethoven and Arnold Schönberg, whose former home now serves as a museum. In the immediate vicinity is the Föhrenberge Nature Park with the Mödling castle ruins and the artificial Pfefferbüchsel ruins, which are popular hiking destinations. Economically, Mödling is today primarily an important school center and an upscale residential area in the suburban belt of Vienna. The city features a lively pedestrian zone with numerous cafes and shops that preserve its small-town charm. The connection to the Southern Railway makes Mödling a good starting point for commuters and visitors to the region.
