Klosterneuburg Monastery (Austria)

Weather…

Klosterneuburg Monastery is a significant Augustinian Abbey located just outside Vienna in Lower Austria. Founded in 1114 by Margrave Leopold III of the House of Babenberg, the patron saint of Austria, it has served as a religious and cultural hub for over nine centuries. The sprawling complex showcases a mix of architectural styles, most notably its medieval foundations and the massive Baroque expansion commissioned by Emperor Charles VI. Charles intended to create an Austrian 'Escorial' here to serve as a Habsburg residence, though the project was only partially completed. The monastery's greatest treasure is the Verdun Altar, finished in 1181, which is a masterpiece of medieval enamel and goldsmithing. Beyond its spiritual role, the abbey operates one of the oldest and largest wine estates in Austria, with extensive cellars.
