Klosterneuburg is located immediately northwest of Vienna on the right bank of the Danube, set between the river and the slopes of the Vienna Woods. The city is inseparably linked to Klosterneuburg Abbey, founded in 1114 by the Babenberg Margrave Leopold III, the Holy. The abbey was for centuries a spiritual and cultural center of Austria and houses the Verdun Altar from 1181, one of the most important artworks of the Middle Ages. The architecture of the abbey is characterized by a Baroque expansion phase under Emperor Charles VI, who planned a monumental residence here based on the model of the Escorial. In addition to its religious significance, Klosterneuburg is a center of viticulture and home to Austria's oldest winery and the renowned viticulture school. The hilly landscape with its vineyards characterizes the cityscape and makes it a popular excursion destination. Economically, the city benefits from its proximity to the federal capital but also serves as a research location through the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). Cultural life is enriched by museums such as the Abbey Museum and formerly the Essl Museum, as well as regular opera performances in the abbey courtyard.
