Stockerau is the largest city in the Weinviertel region of Lower Austria, located just a few kilometers northwest of Vienna. The city is often referred to as the 'Lenau City,' after the poet Nikolaus Lenau, who spent formative years here. Historically, Stockerau developed from a strategically favorable location on the Danube and was granted market rights as early as the 15th century. A landmark visible from afar is the baroque spire of the Parish Church of St. Stephen, which at 88 meters is the tallest church tower in Lower Austria. Culturally, Stockerau is known for the Stockerau Festival, which gives high-quality theatrical performances every summer against the backdrop of the parish church. The city serves as an important economic hub with a blend of traditional craft businesses and modern service companies. A special natural gem is the Stockerauer Au, a protected floodplain forest that serves as a recreation area and habitat for rare animal and plant species. Excellent transport links to the federal capital, Vienna, make Stockerau a popular residential location for commuters. Despite its proximity to the metropolis, Stockerau has maintained a bustling independence with active community life and diverse educational institutions.
