Gumpoldskirchen
Gumpoldskirchen is one of Austria's most famous wine villages, picturesquely located at the foot of the Anninger mountain south of Vienna. The village is world-renowned for its white wines, especially the indigenous Zierfandler (Spätrot) and Rotgipfler varieties, which thrive almost exclusively in this region. The 'Heuriger' culture is maintained here with great passion, with numerous traditional taverns inviting visitors to taste wines directly from the producer. The townscape is characterized by historic buildings, most notably the 14th-century Teutonic Order Castle and the late Gothic parish church of St. Michael. The town hall with its Renaissance-style arcades is another architectural jewel. Gumpoldskirchen has managed to preserve its village character despite its proximity to the metropolis of Vienna. Narrow alleys and flower-adorned courtyards define the appealing center. For nature lovers, the surroundings offer numerous hiking trails through the vineyards and the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald). Particularly popular is the hike up the Anninger or along the 1st Vienna Water Pipeline Path, which gives magnificent views over the Vienna Basin. Gumpoldskirchen is easily reachable from Vienna via the Southern Railway (Südbahn) in less than 30 minutes, making it a convenient destination for a day trip that perfectly combines indulgence, history, and nature.
