Spitz an der Donau (Austria)

Weather…

Spitz an der Donau is a pretty market town in the heart of the Wachau, located around the so-called 'Tausendeimerberg' (Thousand Bucket Hill). The name stems from the fact that in good years, the vineyard produced up to a thousand buckets of wine (about 56,000 liters). The town is characterized by its extremely steep vineyard terraces, which are still laboriously tended by hand and produce some of the world's finest white wines. The architecture of Spitz is shaped by late Gothic and Renaissance elements. Particularly worth seeing are the late Gothic parish church of St. Mauritius and Erlahof Castle, which now houses the Shipping Museum. This museum documents the former importance of the Danube as a trade route and the technique of wooden boat building before the era of steamships. Another highlight is the 'Red Gate' (Rotes Tor), a remnant of the old fortifications, offering a spectacular view of the town and the river. Culinary life in Spitz revolves around wine and the Wachau apricot. Numerous 'Heurigen' in the town offer the first-rate opportunity to taste local specialties in an authentic atmosphere. For active travelers, Spitz provides access to the Wachau World Heritage Trail and numerous cycling paths along the Danube. The roll-on ferry to Arnsdorf is one of the few ways to cross the Danube without a bridge and is an experience in itself.
