Splügen (Switzerland)

Weather…

Splügen (Romansh: Spleia) is one of the oldest and most typical pass villages in Grisons, located at the junction of the routes to the Splügen Pass and the San Bernardino Pass. The village has received several awards, including the Wakker Prize for its well-preserved townscape. Characteristic are the proud Walser houses with their typical stone slab roofs, which bear witness to centuries of history as an important transshipment point for pack animal traffic over the Alps. Today, Splügen is a quiet find for those seeking peace and nature lovers. In winter, the ski area at Tamboalp features sunny and well-laid-out slopes, as well as excellent conditions for cross-country skiers and snowshoe hikers. The region is known for its pristine nature and tranquility away from the major tourist centers. A special experience is a winter hike along the Hinterrhein (Posterior Rhine). In summer, Splügen is a good starting point for hikes on the historic 'Via Spluga' long-distance trail, which leads all the way to Chiavenna in Italy. The architecture of the village is best explored on a walk, where you can marvel at the magnificent palazzi and the simple but solid residential houses. Splügen preserves its identity as a border town between the German-speaking Walser culture and the Italian-influenced south.
