Piz Medel (Switzerland)

Weather…

Piz Medel is the highest peak in the Medel group of the Adula Alps, reaching an altitude of 3,210 meters. Located in the canton of Graubünden, south of Disentis, it is surrounded by the extensive Medel Glacier (Glatscher da Medel). Climbing the mountain is considered a classic high-alpine tour, particularly favored by ski mountaineers in winter due to the gentle gradients of its glaciers. The summit was first reached in 1865 by a party led by Stephen Winkworth. The Medelser Hut, situated at 2,524 meters near the Fuorcla da Lavaz, is the primary staging point for climbers. Geologically, Piz Medel is part of the Gotthard Massif and consists mainly of crystalline rocks such as gneiss and granite. The summit provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Rheinwaldhorn massif and, on clear days, extends as far as the Bernese Alps.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Piz Medel is typically reached from Val Medel via Curaglia, with the Medelser Hut serving as a base. The ascent leads through remote and wild alpine valleys of the Graubünden region.
📅
Best season
In summer, high-altitude tours are best from July to September, while winter is handy for ski touring. The region is known for its good snow conditions lasting well into the spring months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is varied, encompassing gentler alpine meadows in the valley as well as barren rock and glaciers at the summit. It is a classic high-altitude mountain with some technical demands.
🎒
What to bring
Full high-altitude mountaineering equipment is absolutely necessary for the glacier passages. Warm, layered clothing should be carried even in summer due to the altitude and risk of wind.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces are found in the village of Curaglia or at hiking car parks in Val Medel. It is advisable to strictly observe local signs regarding parking prohibitions in the narrow mountain villages.
⚠️
Safety
Glacier experience and knowledge of crevasse rescue are important for an independent ascent. In fog, orientation on the vast glacier surfaces can become extremely difficult for visitors.
⏱️
Time needed
The tour is usually split over two days, with the ascent to the hut taking about 3 hours. The final summit push on the second day takes another 4 to 5 hours for experienced mountaineers.
