💡 Tips

  • In the late afternoon, watch for the famous 'Maloja Snake' weather phenomenon, a bank of clouds that flows over the pass into the Engadin valley. The path to the Belvedere Tower is a great vantage point.
  • Use the PostBus for excursions. It connects the Engadin with Val Bregaglia, offering spectacular views without the hassle of parking.
  • Take a hike along Lake Sils to Sils Maria. The path is mostly flat and features beautiful views of the lake and mountains.
  • Explore Val Bregaglia, the valley on the Italian-speaking side of the pass. It has a completely different atmosphere from the Engadin, with appealing stone villages and chestnut forests.
  • In winter, always check road conditions before setting off. The Maloja Pass can be temporarily closed during heavy snowfall.

Maloja is situated at 1,815 m above sea level at the pass connecting the Upper Engadin with the steeply descending Val Bregaglia. This unique topography creates the 'Maloja Snake,' a weather phenomenon where clouds slide up the valley like a serpent. The village was home to the painter Giovanni Segantini, who immortalized the alpine landscape in his works; his atelier and grave are open to visitors. The Maloja Kulm Hotel at the pass summit has one of the Alps' most dramatic views over the hairpin bends of the pass road. In summer, Maloja is a hub for hikers and climbers. The glacial potholes (Gletschertöpfe) in the nature reserve are a highlight, serving as remnants of the last ice age. The Belvedere Tower, a neo-Gothic structure, provides an excellent vantage point over the valley. In winter, the village is the starting point for the famous Engadin Ski Marathon, utilizing the frozen surface of Lake Sils. Maloja is reached via the Julier Pass road or from Italy through Val Bregaglia. The best time to visit is autumn for the golden larch forests or mid-winter for cross-country skiing.
