Landquart is situated in the Rhine Valley at the confluence of the Landquart River and the Alpine Rhine, forming the economic center of the Northern Grisons region. The municipality emerged in its current form through the merger of Igis and Landquart in 2012. Geographically, the town marks the transition from the Rhine plain into the valleys of the Prättigau and Surselva. Landquart is internationally known as the headquarters of the Rhaetian Railway, whose main workshops are located here, making it one of the most important railway hubs in Switzerland. Economically, the municipality has transformed from a purely industrial site into a modern service center. A magnet for visitors from home and abroad is the Landquart Fashion Outlet, built in the style of a Grisons mountain village. Alongside trade and transport, education plays an important role, notably through the Plantahof agricultural school. Despite its modern infrastructure, Landquart provides access to untouched nature, with numerous hiking trails along the Rhine and into the surrounding mountain ranges. Its strategic location on the A13 motorway and the railway line towards Chur makes Landquart a preferred residential location for professionals and commuters in the Canton of Grisons.
