🍽 Food
Ask local restaurants for fresh Arctic char or trout from the lake. It's often prepared simply to highlight the delicate flavour.
A small, round pastry, often flavoured with aniseed. You can find it in Sils' bakeries as a well-suited little snack for a hike.
After a walk in the cold, enjoy a rich hot chocolate in one of the historic hotels in Sils. It's the excellent way to warm up.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots

The local bakeries are the best place to buy an authentic Engadiner Nusstorte or a Grisons pear bread (Birnbrot) as a souvenir.
The path on the left bank of the lake is particularly quiet and gives wonderful views across the water to Maloja. Well-suited for a morning meditation.
As the valley is car-free, all you hear is the rush of the stream and the bells of the horses. Hike deep into the valley to find complete silence.

Sils (Segl in Romansh) lies on a strip of land between Lake Sils and Lake Silvaplana in the Upper Engadin. Comprising the two sections of Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia, it is regarded as one of the region's most exclusive yet tranquil locations. Its unique light and vast landscapes have inspired many artists and thinkers. Friedrich Nietzsche spent seven summers here between 1881 and 1888; his former residence is now the Nietzsche House, a museum and research center. Hermann Hesse and Thomas Mann also valued the seclusion of Sils. The village is the great starting point for excursions into the car-free Fex Valley (Val Fex), which can be explored on foot or by horse-drawn carriage. In summer, Lake Sils hosts the highest scheduled boat service in Europe. For hikers, the Chastè peninsula is, featuring a monument to Nietzsche. Winter provides the nearby Furtschellas ski area and extensive cross-country trails. Sils is easily reached by PostBus from St. Moritz. The best time to visit is late summer for clear mountain air or January for deep snowy landscapes.
