Haldenstein Castle Ruins

The Haldenstein Castle ruins are prominently located on a steep rocky outcrop above the municipality of the same name near Chur in the Canton of Graubünden. First mentioned in the 12th century, it was for centuries the ancestral seat of the Lords of Haldenstein, who played a significant role in regional politics as ministerials of the Bishopric of Chur. The complex consists of a compact core castle with a massive keep, which emphasized the fortress's defensive capabilities. In the 16th century, the castle lost its importance as the new, more comfortable Haldenstein Castle was built below the cliff, leading to the gradual neglect of the old site. A devastating earthquake in 1769 severely damaged the remaining walls and accelerated its decay into ruins. Despite the decline, the architectural structures, such as the palas and the curtain wall, are still clearly recognizable today, providing insights into the High Medieval military architecture of the Alpine region.
