💡 Tips
- Take advantage of the guest card, which you often receive with your accommodation. It provides free or discounted rides on the mountain railways and public transport in the Surses region.
- Parc Ela is huge. Choose one of the themed trails or a shorter circular hike from Savognin if you have limited time. The park's visitor centre can provide maps and recommendations.
- Listen closely: Romansh, Switzerland's fourth national language, is actively spoken in the Surses valley. You will discover the language on signs and in conversations.
- In summer, the Lai Barnagn bathing lake is a popular and easily accessible spot for families to cool off and relax.
- The Son Mitgel church sits enthroned above the village. The short walk up is rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley.
🍽 Food
A type of Graubünden spaetzle made from buckwheat, often served with vegetables and cheese. A staple in the region's restaurants that you should try.
A traditional dish made from grated potatoes roasted in butter. It is typically served with apple sauce and alpine cheese and is very filling.
An air-dried raw sausage from the region. It's the excellent, robust snack for a hike and is available in local butchers.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Look out for signs for 'Hofladen' or direct farm sales outside the village to buy fresh cheese, eggs and cured meats.
In some small shops in the village you can find local wood carvings and other handmade souvenirs that reflect the spirit of the Alps.
Just a short drive or bus ride away, this reservoir gives memorable turquoise water and quiet walking paths along its shore.
A high moorland, considered a 'treasure island of biodiversity'. Reachable by a small bus, it features wide, open spaces and quiet trails away from the main resort.
Take the chairlift to Tigignas and take a short walk to this chapel. The view and the silence are a wonderful reward.
Water temperature…
Savognin is situated in a wide high valley of the Surses and is known for its mild climate and high amount of sunshine. The village is the cultural center of the region and an important representative of the Romansh language. The village scene is defined by three distinctive churches and the remains of old fortifications, giving Savognin a historical depth. As a family-friendly destination, Savognin provides particularly wide slopes in winter, well-suited for children and leisure skiers. The ski area extends up to an altitude of 2713 meters and features an impressive view of the Central Grisons mountains. A highlight is the extra-long sledging run from Somtgant down to the village. In summer, the 'Lai Barnagn' swimming lake right in the village invites relaxation on warm days. Savognin is the handy base for explorations in Parc Ela, Switzerland's largest nature park. Hikers find over 400 kilometers of marked trails leading through pristine landscapes, dense forests, and gentle alpine meadows. There are also numerous attractive routes for mountain bikers. Local gastronomy serves specialties of Grisons cuisine, and cultural events like the Origen Culture Festival in Riom Castle delight visitors from near and far.
