Madesimo is situated at 1,550 meters in the upper Valchiavenna, just a few kilometers from the Swiss border. The village gained fame in the late 19th century as a favorite retreat for Nobel laureate poet Giosuè Carducci. Today, it stands as a refined ski resort known for its accessibility and high-quality slopes. The Valchiavenna ski area provides 60 km of varied terrain. Its most famous feature is the 'Canalone', a legendary un-groomed itinerary down a steep couloir, often cited by experts as one of the finest runs in the Alps. The 'Sky Express' underground funicular connects the resort to the valley floor in just 7 minutes. In summer, the area is well-suited for hiking to the Spluga Pass or the easy on the eye Montespluga Lake. Reaching Madesimo from Milan involves a scenic drive along Lake Como and through the historic town of Chiavenna. Local delicacies include Valchiavenna bresaola and 'pizzoccheri bianchi'. The best time for winter sports is January to March, while summer hiking peaks in August.
