The Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique protected area located in the Moa River in southeastern Sierra Leone, established in 1987. The island, spanning approximately 12 square kilometers, is world-renowned for its exceptionally high primate density, with eleven different species, including chimpanzees and Diana monkeys, coexisting in a small area. Geographically isolated by the river, the island has preserved a dense rainforest with an impressive variety of flora and fauna. Besides primates, the island provides a habitat for the rare pygmy hippopotamus and over 135 bird species, making it a key destination for ecotourism. Management is conducted jointly by local villages and conservation organizations, serving as a pioneer project for sustainable tourism in West Africa. The island has been on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list since 2006 due to its universal ecological significance.

Getting there
The island is accessed via motorboat from the mainland, with visitors typically arriving through the town of Kenema before continuing to the riverbank.
Best season
The best time for a visit is during the dry season from November to April, when the island trails are dry and wildlife is more easily spotted in the forest.
Terrain & paths
Expect dense tropical rainforest trails that are flat but root-filled and have high humidity, which can make hiking more strenuous than usual.
What to bring
Bring binoculars for primate spotting, lightweight but protective clothing against insects, and waterproof hiking shoes for the forest treks.

Parking is available at the mainland base station near the village of Kambama, where the boats depart for the island across the Moa River.
