Pujehun is the headquarters of the eponymous district in Sierra Leone's Southern Province, lying near the border with Liberia in the southern hinterland between the mouths of the Wanje and Mano rivers. The town is the seat of Panga Krim chiefdom and developed during the British colonial period into an important administrative post and trading station for palm oil, rice, cocoa, and tropical timber. Pujehun is surrounded by extensive swamp rice fields, mangroves, and secondary forests, and is home to a culturally mixed population of Mende, Vai, Krim, and Gola. During the civil war the town was one of the first front lines because of its proximity to the Liberian border and the advance routes of the RUF. After 2002, Pujehun was rebuilt with international support; today it has a district hospital, several secondary schools, a vocational training center, administrative offices, and a number of market stalls bringing together traders from Bo, Kenema, and Sulima. Export-oriented rice projects with Asian investors have also at times been pursued in the area.
