Taiama is a small town in Moyamba District in Sierra Leone's Southern Province, set on the Taia River, one of the country's most important waterways. The town is the headquarters of Kori chiefdom and has been a central marketplace for rice, palm oil, and livestock from the wide floodplains around the river for centuries. Taiama gained particular importance in the 19th century as the seat of leading Mende chiefs and during the British colonial era as an administrative and mission center. Methodist and United Brethren in Christ missions worked here, building schools, chapels, and small clinics. After independence Taiama remained an educational hub with several secondary schools and a strong sports culture. During the civil war the town was affected several times, but its location away from the main combat zones meant it suffered less damage than other places in the region. Today Taiama stands for Mende cultural tradition, with chiefly courts, secret societies, traditional music, and a rich oral history reaching back to the 18th century.
