Sumbuya is a small town in Bo District in Sierra Leone's Southern Province, set on the Sewa River at the boundary between Bo and Pujehun districts. The town has been an important river port and market since pre-colonial times, where pirogues laden with rice, palm oil, and kola from the southern lowlands docked. During the British colonial era Sumbuya was developed as an administrative post intermediating trade between Bo, Pujehun, and Bonthe. In the 1970s and 1980s the town gained further importance from tin and diamond mining in nearby digging areas and from the rise of rice plantations in the Sewa floodplain. Today Sumbuya hosts a lively weekly market drawing traders from Bo, Pujehun, Mattru Jong, and Bonthe; the town has a secondary school, several primary schools, a health center, churches and mosques, and pirogue landings that link the interior to the Sewa estuary and Sherbro Island.
