Mano is a small town in Bo District in Sierra Leone's Southern Province, set along the historic railway and road route between Bo and Pujehun. The town grew up as an important stop on the Sierra Leone Railway, which ran between Freetown and Pendembu and operated a station with warehouses and workshops at Mano. Economically Mano depends on lowland rice farming, palm-oil processing, and cocoa and coffee gardens on the surrounding hills. The weekly market draws traders from Bo, Pujehun, and Bonthe districts. Mano has several schools, a secondary school, a clinic, churches and mosques, plus a sports ground and community halls for regional events. During the civil war Mano was contested from the south on several occasions, but its infrastructure was rebuilt after 2002 with international support. Today Mano stands as a typical example of the railway towns of the southern hinterland, with a character shaped by colonial architecture, old warehouses, and the legacy of the rail link.
