Barma is a Mende village in Kenema District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, lying in the back country of the Kambui Hills. Like most settlements in the region, Barma is essentially agrarian, with extensive rice, cassava, groundnut, and yam fields, plus cocoa and coffee gardens on the slopes of the surrounding hills. Because of its elevation and proximity to streams, Barma enjoys a somewhat cooler microclimate than the hot lowlands, which favors yields of raw cocoa and robusta coffee. Most residents are Mende, and many are members of the traditional Poro and Sande secret societies, which still play a central role in the social life of the village. A small primary school, a Methodist chapel, a market square, and a basic health center form the main institutional nodes. The connecting track to the Kenema-Tongo main road was upgraded after the civil war, making it easier to sell cocoa and palm oil to buyers from Kenema.
