Bo, often referred to simply as Bo Town, is the second-largest city in Sierra Leone and the urban hub of the Southern Province. The city sits in the Mende-speaking heartland and grew from a British colonial administrative post into a dynamic node for trade, education, and transport. The renowned Bo Government Secondary School, popularly known as Bo School, was founded in 1906 by the British colonial authorities and is regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious schools in West Africa, having educated many of the country's leading politicians, lawyers, and scientists. Bo has been a central hub of the Sierra Leonean diamond trade for decades, with stones from artisanal mining areas in Kono, Tongo, and Kenema flowing to dealers based in the town. The bustling Bo Central Market, trading palm oil, rice, cassava, cocoa, and kola nuts, together with the Njala University Bo Campus, are key features of the city. Its position on the main Freetown-Bo-Kenema-Koidu road makes Bo an indispensable transport hub for the south of the country.
