The Dodo Hydroelectric Plant, also known as the Goma-Dodo project, is located in the Kenema District of eastern Sierra Leone. It was originally constructed in the 1980s with international assistance to provide regional power to the major towns of Kenema and Bo. The plant harnesses the flow of local rivers to generate clean energy and stands as one of the country's few operational hydroelectric systems. Following damage sustained during the civil war, the facility underwent extensive rehabilitation, increasing its capacity to approximately 6 megawatts. The plant's significance lies in its ability to reduce reliance on expensive diesel-powered generators and stimulate economic growth in the eastern province. It supplies reliable electricity not only to private residences but also to critical infrastructure such as hospitals and educational institutions. Current development plans aim to further integrate the plant into the national grid to enhance overall energy stability.
