Moyamba is the headquarters of the eponymous district in Sierra Leone's Southern Province and sits about 130 kilometers south-east of Freetown in the hilly Mende interior. The town was one of the first British administrative posts in the hinterland and has hosted, since 1922, the Harford School for Girls, one of the oldest girls' secondary schools in West Africa, founded by the American missionary Anna Hannah Hartzell and the Evangelical United Brethren Mission. Moyamba also occupies a special place in the country's educational history: it was here that Madam Ella Koblo Gulama, future national women's leader and cabinet minister, was educated. The town has a strong administrative role with the district headquarters, a courthouse, a police station, a hospital, and secondary schools. Its economy rests on rice, cassava, groundnut, and yam farming, palm-oil processing, and a busy weekly market. Its location on the former Sierra Leone Railway line, which ran until 1974, and on the main road to Bo still makes Moyamba an important transport hub in the south of the country.
