  • Shenge is a historic coastal town; visit the wharf in the afternoon when the fishing boats return.
  • Arrange a boat trip to experience Sherbro culture and see the coastline from the water.
  • Respect the traditions of the local ruling families (like the Caulkers), who have a long and storied history.

Shenge is a fishing village on the Atlantic coast in Moyamba District in Sierra Leone's Southern Province, set at the mouth of Yawri Bay, one of the country's most important mangrove ecosystems. The settlement has a long history as a hub for Sherbro and Mende fishing and was also a base for British and American missionaries in the 19th century, including a Methodist mission that founded schools and chapels. Shenge is surrounded by long white sandy beaches, palm groves, mangroves, and lagoons, making it an emerging but still little-developed travel destination. The local economy rests on offshore and lagoon fishing, salt and crab production, and a small boat-building trade. International NGOs support programs for sustainable fishing and mangrove protection. For tourism, Shenge is known as the gateway to nearby Plantain Island and the Bonthe islands accessible by boat, and to the traditional culture of the Sherbro people, with their music, dance, and masked Bondo tradition.
