Benduma is a Mende village in Kenema District in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, set in the hilly hinterland between Kenema and Tongo. Like many villages in the region, the settlement belongs to the traditional Lower Bambara, or Nongowa, chiefdom and is representative of rural Mende culture. Residents live primarily from rice farming in swamps and on the slopes of the surrounding hills, from cassava, groundnut, yam, and banana crops, and from cocoa and coffee groves. During the 20th century Benduma was opened up by Christian missions that built several primary schools, a small Methodist chapel, and a health center. In Mende tradition Benduma plays a role as a venue for initiation rites of the male Poro and female Sande secret societies, with structures passed down across generations. During the civil war the village suffered repeated looting because of its location between Tongo Field and Kenema, but most residents returned after 2002.
