Sulima Historical Port (Sierra Leone)

Weather…

The historical port of Sulima is located at the mouth of the Moa River in the Pujehun District, situated precisely on the border with Liberia. Throughout the 19th century, Sulima served as a major trading post for British and other European merchants who sought palm oil, wild rubber, and ivory. Its position on the Atlantic coast made it a strategic maritime point, although the dangerous surf often necessitated skilled navigation to land goods. Sulima was frequently the subject of territorial disputes between the British Crown, local chiefs, and neighboring Liberian interests. During the civil war in the 1990s, the port functioned as a critical crossing point and endured significant infrastructural destruction. Today, Sulima is a peaceful fishing village, yet it retains immense tourism potential due to its expansive sandy beaches and the ruins of colonial trading houses. Its historical role as the maritime gateway to the Pujehun interior is still evident in the remnants of old stone wharves. The site remains an evocative symbol of the fluctuating fortunes of sea trade along the West African coast.
