Sans Souci lies on the slopes above Victoria and along the namesake mountain road that connects the city center with Port Glaud on the western side of Mahé. The name (French for "without care") was bestowed in the eighteenth century by the French governor Romainville, who maintained a quiet summer residence here. Today Sans Souci is one of the most exclusive residential areas on the island, with large villas, embassies, and several historic plantation houses. Because of its higher elevation the temperature averages three to four degrees lower than in Victoria, making the district a pleasant retreat from the midday heat. The district borders directly on Morne Seychellois National Park, whose hiking trails such as the Copolia Trail or the Tea Plantation Trail begin here. A noteworthy site is the Mission Lodge, the ruin of a nineteenth-century school for freed slave children, which today serves as a beautiful viewpoint over central Mahé.
