Grand Anse on the western coast of Mahé should not be confused with the village of the same name on Praslin: here it designates the longest sandy beach on the island as well as the surrounding district. The more than two-kilometer beach is characterized by fine, almost dazzlingly white sand and powerful waves, making it one of the few surfing destinations in the Seychelles. During the southeast monsoon season (May to September), the waves are particularly high and swimming can become dangerous, so the beach is recommended for experienced swimmers. Behind the beach lies a strip of filao casuarinas and Takamaka trees, which protect the sand from erosion. In the district is the Avani Seychelles Barbarons Resort, several small guesthouses, and Creole restaurants serving specialties such as Cari Zourit (octopus curry). A special attraction is the Tea Factory Museum located in the hills above the beach on a former tea plantation.
