Mount Simpson (Seychelles)

Weather…

Mount Simpson is a prominent granite elevation in the northwest of Mahé, located near the settlement of Bel Ombre. A popular hiking trail leads through dense secondary forests and over impressive rock formations to its summit at approximately 600 meters. Geologically, the mountain is defined by vast granite glacis, which are typical of the Seychelles and host sparse but highly specialized vegetation. Botanically, the area is of great significance as it is home to the endemic carnivorous pitcher plant (Nepenthes pervillei) as well as various rare orchid species. From the summit, hikers are rewarded with an extensive panoramic view over Beau Vallon Bay, Silhouette Island, and the surrounding peaks of the Morne Seychellois National Park. The hike is considered moderate and provides deep insights into the geological history and unique flora of the main island.

🧭
Getting there
Visitors typically reach the starting point of the hiking trails on Mahé island by local bus or rental car, navigating the winding coastal roads to the trailhead area.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is generally during the drier months, as tropical rains can make the trails slippery and obscure the fantastic coastal views from the granite peaks.

The terrain consists mainly of steep hiking paths winding through dense vegetation and across exposed granite rock faces, requiring a reasonable level of physical fitness.
🎒
What to bring
It is highly recommended to bring sturdy hiking shoes with good grip for the granite surfaces, plenty of drinking water, and sun protection for the exposed sections of the trail.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces are typically limited and informal near the trailheads on Mahé; visitors should look for safe spots along the road without blocking the traffic or local driveways.
⚠️
Safety
Hikers should exercise caution on wet granite surfaces which can become extremely slippery, and stay on marked paths to avoid getting lost in the dense tropical forest environment.
