Providence is the most important industrial and commercial area of the Seychelles and has emerged since the 1980s on reclaimed land between Victoria and the international airport. The district was developed with Dutch support across several reclamation phases and rapidly became the logistical and economic backbone of the archipelago. Providence hosts the main container port, the wholesale center, the Seychelles Public Utilities Corporation power plant, several factories (including Indian Ocean Tuna, one of the world's largest tuna canneries), and the industrial park with workshops, warehouses, and import companies. The East Coast Highway runs through Providence and ensures fast transport between the capital and the airport. The district also houses the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Finance. Despite its industrial character, smaller canteens and restaurants serve thousands of employees at lunchtime with quickly prepared Creole dishes.
