English River is one of the central districts of the Seychelles capital Victoria and plays a key role in the administration, education, and economy of the archipelago. Its name derives from the small watercourse that once served as a water source for the British garrison. Today the district houses numerous ministries, the main post office, the National Library of the Seychelles, and several secondary schools, including the renowned Seychelles Maritime Academy. The cityscape is dominated by low, often timber-trimmed administrative buildings in Creole colonial style, interspersed with more modern office complexes. Economically English River is a lively business center with banks, insurance companies, and many small restaurants that feed the surrounding civil servants at lunchtime. A cultural particularity is the old Methodist church, one of the few non-Catholic places of worship in the city, and the sports and cultural hall, which regularly hosts concerts and conferences.
