Glacis-Trois Frères Habitat (Seychelles)

Weather…

The Glacis-Trois Frères Habitat is situated on the slopes of the mountain massif above Victoria on the island of Mahé. This area is famous for its spectacular granite formations, known as 'glacis,' and its unique flora. Rare endemic plants, such as the Seychelles Pitcher Plant (Nepenthes pervillei), grow in the rocky crevices and on the barren soils. The vegetation has adapted to the extreme conditions of high solar radiation and rapid water runoff. From the mountain peaks, visitors can enjoy expansive views over the east coast of the island and the Sainte Anne Marine Park. The area is accessible via hiking trails, which require steady footing due to some steep sections. Ecologically, the habitat is of great significance for the conservation of insect species and small reptiles that occur only at these higher altitudes. Management efforts aim to prevent the spread of invasive plant species that could displace the native flora and disrupt the ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from May to October is well-suited for observing the tiny frogs and pitcher plants. In the rainy season, trails are slippery but the vegetation is particularly lush.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning is when the frogs are most active, especially after a humid night. Late afternoon also has good views of the pitcher plants in full display.
📜
Etiquette
Do not touch the rare pitcher plants and stay on trails to protect fragile vegetation. Avoid noise - the tiny frogs are very shy and easily frightened.
🎒
What to bring
A magnifying glass or macro lens helps spot the tiny frogs and pitcher plant details. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential on the steep, often wet trails.
🧭
Getting there
The habitat is reached via a steep hiking trail near Morne Blanc on Mahé island. A guide is recommended as the path is hard to find and they explain the unique flora.
🦌
What to expect
The tiny frogs are superbly camouflaged and barely move - search leaf axils and moist crevices. Allow at least an hour to explore just a few meters of trail.
