Anse Boileau stretches along a long, shallow bay on the western coast of Mahé and is one of those districts where the Creole way of life remains largely untouched by mass tourism. The name traces back to an early French settler, while the settlement itself grew from several nineteenth-century coconut and vanilla plantations. Hidden in the interior are still old plantation tracks and massive granite boulders that blend into the lush tropical forest. The Catholic church of Anse Boileau, a modest white building with a steeply pitched roof, anchors the village community. The bay itself, with its shallow waters and offshore coral patches, is excellent for snorkeling in calm weather but can become considerably rougher during the southeast monsoon season from June to September. Artisanal fishing remains an important livelihood, and several small restaurants serve the morning catch in traditional Creole dishes such as curry de poisson and grilled bourgeois.
