Bel Air lies on a height immediately northwest of Victoria's center and houses one of the oldest cemeteries in the entire archipelago. The Bel Air Cemetery was laid out in the late eighteenth century and contains the graves of numerous early settlers, including the famous tomb of the so-called "Giant of Bel Air," a man of unusual stature who died on Mahé and whose coffin, according to tradition, had to be sealed with slate. Also buried here is the well-known corsair Jean-François Hodoul, a privateer in the service of France. The district today consists of narrow residential streets that climb among granite rocks and ranks among the most atmospheric quarters of the capital thanks to its distinctive architecture and the vegetation of frangipani and mahogany trees. Bel Air is the seat of several schools, including the Beau Belle School, and houses a small nineteenth-century Creole chapel.
