Baie Lazare on the southwestern coast of Mahé takes its name from the French navigator Lazare Picault, who explored the island in 1742 on behalf of the French East India Company, that expedition is regarded as the beginning of the documented history of the Seychelles. The district is home to the iconic Notre Dame de l'Assomption Church of Baie Lazare, a neo-Gothic building of red granite whose pointed steeple dominates the village skyline, erected in the early twentieth century with Italian craftsmanship. The quiet bay itself has turquoise sheltered waters, offshore coral gardens, and several small beach resorts. The region also hosts the famous studio of artist Michael Adams, whose vividly colored prints depicting Seychellois vegetation are collected worldwide. Economically Baie Lazare benefits from upmarket tourism, boutique hotels, and handicrafts, while the inland hills continue to produce vanilla, mango, and cinnamon.
