Petit Paris is a small village on the eastern coast of Mahé whose ironic name (French for "Little Paris") goes back to an anecdote of the early colonists, who built a few elegant timber cottages here and jokingly spoke of a "little Paris." Despite the name, Petit Paris is a modest settlement stretched along a narrow strip between the East Coast Road and the steep slopes of the Tribourg range. The homes are mostly traditional Creole buildings with corrugated metal roofs, small timber verandas, and tropical gardens. Characteristic is a strong connection to nature: the slopes behind the village are densely forested and host rare bird species such as the endemic Seychelles bulbul. Just offshore lies a shallow reef that provides good protection against strong waves. The few small shops and restaurants are concentrated along the main road. Petit Paris is a good example of the rural side of Mahé, far from tourist hustle, with its own small school and a tight-knit community that preserves Creole roots.
