Vista Do Mar is a small, exclusive residential area in the Glacis district at the northern end of Mahé, whose Portuguese-sounding name means "Sea View." The district sits raised above the coastal road, and from its villas and apartments enjoys a sweeping panoramic view over the Indian Ocean, especially to the north toward the small North Island and to the west toward Silhouette Island. The neighborhood developed mainly in the 1990s, when affluent investors began buying plots on this hillside. Characteristic are the individually designed homes with large verandas, swimming pools, and tropical gardens. In the area also lies the namesake Vista Do Mar Hotel, plus a spa and a vegetarian restaurant, which thanks to their elevated location offer particularly romantic views. Nearby, rocky paths wind down to small, secluded beaches, and on the surrounding slopes grow wild anthuriums and endemic fern species.
