Roça Novo Destino (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Novo Destino (New Destiny) bears a name that reflects the hopes and ambitions of its founders in the late 19th century. As part of the cocoa revolution in São Tomé, it was established with the goal of extracting maximum profit from the cultivation of the coveted raw material. The plantation, like others, was a self-contained system with a main house for the administrator, simple huts for the workers (serviçais), an infirmary, and the necessary processing facilities for the cocoa beans. However, the name 'New Destiny' was in stark contrast to the reality of the workers, whose fate was often marked by disease, exploitation, and a lack of freedom. After independence and the collapse of the plantation economy, the Roça was abandoned to its fate. The decaying buildings, especially the characteristic drying sheds, are now silent witnesses to an era in which the island's 'new destiny' was built on the backs of thousands of forced laborers. The ruins are a poignant memorial to the social costs of the colonial cocoa boom.
