Roça Plancad (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça Plancad, often described as an abandoned plantation, is a lesser-known but historically significant example of São Tomé's agricultural development. Like many others, it was founded in the 19th century during the cocoa boom, contributing to the island's position as the world's leading cocoa producer. Its remote location in the island's interior made it highly dependent on the labor force housed in the nearby sanzalas. Oral tradition and the few surviving records suggest a strict regime and difficult living conditions. After independence, the plantation was abandoned, and its buildings, including the small administrative office and drying facilities, were left to decay. Today, the ruins, slowly being consumed by the lush tropical vegetation, are a silent testament to the forgotten history of hundreds of smaller plantations that formed the backbone of the colonial economy, but whose individual heritage is often overshadowed by the larger, more famous Roças.
