The ascent to Lagoa Amélia leads through pristine montane rainforest often shrouded in thick mist, giving the region a mystical atmosphere. Getting there

The volcanic crater is accessible only on foot through the mountain forest of Obo National Park, usually starting near the Bom Sucesso botanical garden. A local guide is typically required and prevents visitors from getting lost in the dense greenery.

The best time for this hike is during the long dry season between June and September, when the steep jungle paths are significantly less slippery. During the rainy season, the trail often transforms into a highly challenging, muddy track.

Terrain & paths

The trail climbs steeply through dense primary forest, ending surprisingly at a mossy, swampy plain within the crater, which visitors must not walk on. The paths are constantly crisscrossed by wet tree roots and abundant ferns.

Waterproof, ankle-high hiking boots are utterly indispensable due to the omnipresent mud, as is a high-quality insect repellent. Lightweight, breathable clothing and a reliable rain jacket should be standard gear in this humid altitude.

Cars can normally be safely parked at the starting point of the hike within the grounds of the Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden. It is generally recommended to have your driver wait there until you return from your jungle trek.

Under no circumstances should you attempt to walk on the mossy surface of Lagoa Amélia, as the swamp cover is treacherous and can collapse. Stay close to your guide at all times to avoid accidental encounters with venomous snakes.
