Roça São José (São Tomé & Príncipe)

Weather…

Roça São José is one of the many historic plantations that shape the landscape and history of São Tomé. Its founding in the 19th century occurred during the period when the island was transforming from a sugar colony into a center for coffee and later cocoa cultivation. The Roça was a self-sufficient complex with a main house, housing for hundreds of contract laborers, its own hospital, and even a small church. Production at São José was entirely geared towards export, contributing to the immense wealth of a small Portuguese elite, while the African workers lived in slave-like conditions. The architecture of the main buildings still bears witness to its former prosperity. After independence in 1975, the plantation, like most others, was nationalized, leading to a sharp decline in production and the decay of its infrastructure. Today, Roça São José is a place of memory, its decaying buildings telling of a complex past filled with economic ambition and human exploitation.
