Nyungwe Forest is one of the best-preserved montane rainforests in Central Africa, located in southwestern Rwanda and bordering Kibira National Park in Burundi. The forest is celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity, particularly its 13 primate species, including chimpanzees and large troops of Angolan colobus monkeys. With over 300 bird species, hundreds of orchid species, and numerous butterflies, it's a naturalist's paradise. The area was designated a National Park in 2004 and features a network of hiking trails, including the famous Canopy Walk, which provides a unique perspective of the forest's canopy. The park plays a critical role as a major water catchment area, feeding both the Congo and Nile river systems.
