The region is known for its sweeping scenery, characterized by steep hills sloping down to the lake, covered with coffee and tea plantations. Nyamasheke is a center for the production of high-quality Arabica coffee, which benefits from the rich volcanic soil and good climate. The town serves as a starting point for visiting the southern part of Nyungwe National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, including a large population of chimpanzees and other primates.
