Nyamata is located in the Bugesera district, southeast of Kigali, in a region characterized by a flatter landscape with numerous lakes and swamps. The city is inextricably linked to the history of the 1994 genocide. The former church of Nyamata is now one of the most poignant memorial sites in the country, preserving the clothes and mortal remains of thousands of victims who had sought refuge in the house of worship. Apart from its tragic past, Nyamata is developing into an important center for the future of Rwanda. The new Bugesera International Airport is being built in the immediate vicinity, which is intended to replace Kigali as the country's main airport. This massive infrastructure project is driving the city's growth and attracting investment and new residents.
