Rwamagana is the bustling capital of Rwanda's Eastern Province, located about 50 kilometers east of Kigali. The city is an important agricultural and industrial center. Its flat topography, atypical for the otherwise hilly Rwanda, favors agriculture, especially the cultivation of bananas and beans. More recently, Rwamagana has become a center for sustainable energy. Near the city is the Gigawatt Global Solar Power Plant, the first commercial solar power plant in East Africa, which was commissioned in 2014 and contributes a significant portion to the national power grid. The city also houses a large provincial hospital and several educational institutions, underscoring its importance as a regional center. The good transport links to Kigali make it an attractive location for commuters and businesses.
