It is strategically located on the main road leading to Tanzania and serves as an important commercial and administrative center for the region. The landscape around Ngoma is gentler and drier than in the rest of the country and is dominated by banana plantations. The city is known for the production of Urwagwa, a traditional banana beer. Ngoma is also an educational center, with several schools and a campus of the University of Rwanda. The nearby Lake Mugesera features opportunities for recreation and fishing. The city has a large provincial hospital and is an important hub for the transport of goods and people to the east of the country.
