Ethnographic Museum (Rwanda)

Weather…

The Ethnographic Museum, located in Huye (formerly Butare), is one of the six museums that make up the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. It was built in 1989 as a gift from the Belgian government to mark the 25th anniversary of Rwanda's independence. The museum houses one of Africa's finest ethnographic and archaeological collections. Its seven galleries display the social, economic, and cultural evolution of the Rwandan people. Visitors can see artifacts related to hunting, agriculture, animal husbandry, pottery, and weaving. There is also an impressive reconstruction of a traditional Rwandan royal residence. The museum played a tragic role during the 1994 genocide, as Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana and many others sought refuge and were killed here.
