Nyagatare is the largest city and administrative center of the district of the same name in the dry and flat Eastern Province of Rwanda. The region, often referred to as the 'Rwandan savannah', is traditionally a center of cattle breeding. The city has experienced enormous growth in recent decades, largely due to the return of Rwandan refugees from Uganda after the 1994 genocide. Today, Nyagatare is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. The economy is dominated by cattle breeding and milk production, but the cultivation of maize and bananas is also important. The city is home to a campus of the University of Rwanda specializing in agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine, reflecting the region's economic focus. The proximity to Akagera National Park also contributes to the city's growing importance.
